Introduction: Depression and anxiety are among the main psychological issues that, if persistent and intensified, can develop into serious disorders and impose significant burdens on society. Maintaining tranquility and preventing these disorders contributes to the enhancement of community welfare and well-being. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of depression and anxiety disorders in the population of Ilam City in 1399 (2020).
Materials and Methods: This descriptive-analytical cross-sectional study targeted individuals aged 15 to 65 years in Ilam City. A total of 821 participants (493 women and 328 men) were selected using a combination of cluster sampling and simple random sampling methods. Data were collected through a demographic questionnaire and structured interviews based on the Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia (SADS). Data analysis was conducted using SPSS version 22, employing descriptive statistics and variance analysis.
Results: The prevalence of major depression was 14.7%, dysthymia 14.4%, generalized anxiety disorder 10%, obsessive-compulsive disorder 14.7%, and phobia 14%. Significant relationships were observed between depression disorders and age and education level (P<0.05), as well as between panic disorder and occupation and education level (P<0.05).
Conclusion: This study indicates a high prevalence of anxiety disorders and a moderate to high prevalence of depression in the studied population, highlighting the need for educational and intervention programs to prevent psychological issues in Ilam province. Keywords: Epidemiology, Depression, Anxiety, Ilam
