Introduction: Suicide is a crisis for societies. One of the most important methods of suicide prevention is to identify factors that reduce these thoughts. The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between psychological distress, mindfulness, and sleep quality and suicidal thoughts in patients with depressive disorders.
Materials and Methods: The research method was correlational. 150 people were selected by the convenience sampling method from the statistical population of this study, including all patients with depressive disorder in Tabriz County (Iran) who were referred to psychology and psychiatry clinics in the second quarter of 2023. The subjects received a diagnosis of depression from a psychologist based on DSM-5 criteria. The data collection tools were the Psychological Distress Scale (DASS), Kentucky Mindfulness Scale (KIMS), Sleep Quality Scale (PSQI), and Beck Suicidal Questionnaire. The results were analyzed using SPSS V.25 software, Pearson correlation, and multiple regression methods.
Results: In patients with depressive disorders, psychological distress has a positive and significant relationship with suicidal thoughts and mindfulness, and there is a negative and significant relationship between sleep quality and suicidal thoughts (P<0.05). Psychological distress, mindfulness, and sleep quality were able to predict suicidal thoughts in patients with depressive disorders (P<0.05).
Conclusion: The variables of psychological distress, mindfulness, and sleep quality are also effective in increasing or decreasing these thoughts. Given that suicidal thoughts can be a precursor to suicide attempts, practical steps can be taken to prevent this social problem by providing practical suggestions for improving mindfulness and sleep quality in depressed patients, as well as reducing psychological distress.
